VICTORINO MAPA, the second Filipino chief justice of the Supreme Court, was born in Kalibo, then a town in Capiz, on 25 February 1852.  He had served as Register of Deeds of Iloilo and later as Vice Mayor of Iloilo.

 
CASTLE Brothers, Wolf and Sons is an American trading company with offices in Manila and Iloilo during the 1900s. Its Iloilo building (see photo above) was located along De la Rama Street near the Iloilo port. It figured in a lawsuit in 1912.  

“I AM Assistant Matron in this Dormitory and am also teaching Domestic Science.” Thus wrote the unidentified sender of the postcard above featuring the Iloilo Girls’ Dormitory, circa 1920.

BETWEEN 1890 and 1891, Dean Conant Worcester, an American zoologist who later became a member of the United States Philippine Commission (1899-1901), visited Guimaras Island several times to collect specimens of Philippine fauna. He took the photographs above and below right, two of the many albumen prints he produced during his stay in the country.

THE NEW House Speaker, Prospero Nograles, should thank the Almighty for giving Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez a new lease on life after a kidney transplant. Had Gonzalez not returned to the Justice portfolio due to his illness, Nograles could have not become House Speaker.

NORBERTO MANERO is from Barangay Madong, Janiuay, Iloilo. He was head of the dreaded “anti-Moro” vigilante group called “Ilaga Movement” in Mindanao. The group, according to popular accounts, was born in the 1960s primarily to protect Christian settlers against Muslims resisting the government’s settlement program.

HOUSE SPEAKER Prospero Nograles, representative of the first district of Davao City, is part Ilonggo. His father, Enrico Teruel Nograles, was from Tigbauan, Iloilo while his mother, Vicenta Castillo, was from Batangas.

FELIPE LANDA JOCANO, the first Filipino Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology, was born on February 5, 1930 in Cabatuan, Iloilo. The youngest son of Eusebio Jocano and Anastascia Landa of Barangay Salacay, he is currently Professor Emeritus at the Asian Center of the University of the Philippines and Executive Director of Punlad Research House, Inc.
