Iloilo airport relocation site revisited
Posted on June 26th, 2008REMEMBER that issue several years back where Iloilo provincial officials, from Governor Niel Tupaz down to his minions, were warned about relocating families affected by the construction of the new Iloilo airport to a site in Barangay Banguit, Cabatuan because it is a riverbed and therefore flood-prone?
The governor, including Mayor Ramon Yee of Cabatuan, ignored the warning, giving rise to speculations that the original owner of the land, the Montaño family, was favored for some considerations. There were also reports that the land was purchased at a cost way above its actual value.
The images in this page, taken from the relocation site in Barangay Banguit after it was submerged by floodwaters following the onslaught of Typhoon Frank, answer some unanswered questions involving that forgotten controversy.
