Postcards from Iloilo, 1900-1920
Posted on February 17th, 2008“I AM Assistant Matron in this Dormitory and am also teaching Domestic Science.” Thus wrote the unidentified sender of the postcard above featuring the Iloilo Girls’ Dormitory, circa 1920.
The Iloilo Girls’ Dormitory is now the Defensor Building at the Iloilo National High School campus that houses the Iloilo School of the Arts. It used to be occupied by the Department of Education Division of Iloilo before it moved to its new building beside the Iloilo Provincial Library.
Postcards like the ones found in this page were in circulation during the American colonial period. Click on the images to view the larger files. Above right is the Iloilo Fort, while below are the Jaro Archbishop’s Palace and the Jaro belfry (left), the Iloilo Grade School (center) and the Iloilo River (right).
