Our barangay kapitanes can lead the way

Posted on March 10th, 2009

SOME 27 barangays out of 180 that we have in Iloilo City are located along the Iloilo River. One of them is Brgy. San Pedro in Molo district, just behind the bus terminal for south-bound buses to Antique.

When we visited the barangay, we were pleasantly surprised to see an ecological park built by the residents along the Iloilo River, a project of the village under Barangay Captain Cirilo Lapascua Jr.

During our visit last Saturday, we caught up with a team of Philippine Navy personnel from the local unit in Iloilo City, helping with the maintenance and cleanup of the park at the request of the barangay leader who was there personally supervising the work.

Ornamental plants line up the walks of the park. It has some wooden benches along the paths and a shed at the center was also provided with a pair of benches facing one another.

What a great service to our city if all the kapitanes of the river barangays follow Brgy. San Pedro’s example by converting the river banks fronting their barangays into ecological parks!

One thing is sure: there will be no more garbage-throwing in the area of the park or on the river fronting it.

By the way, Brgy. San Pedro will sponsor a baroto (a small rowboat) racing event on the 28th of this month in front of the eco-park Maybe, the kapitanes of our other river barangays will have a chance to visit Brgy. San Pedro on this occasion to see how the people of the barangay beautified and cleaned their river bank because of the eco-park.

It is also a natural infrastructure for tourism if we develop it into one, as what other countries are doing to their rivers located in cities.

As we leave this Iloilo River issue for other community concerns in the coming weeks, we would like to stress the serious need to save this major commercial asset of our city by conserving and restoring it into a clean and healthy river for everyone to enjoy.

Our barangay kapitanes along the river bank can lead the way!
