Sibunag
Posted on September 15th, 2008WE had a sort of “tour” of Sibunag last week to take a good look at the area for future business possibilities.
Where is Sibunag? For those of you who are not familiar with Guimaras, maybe you should know that it is one of the most romantic places of the province. Why? When the municipality was created in 1995 under Republic Act No. 7896 together with San Lorenzo town to the northeast, Sibunag got more share of the beautiful and small islands or islets of Guimaras.
The municipality of Sibunag is situated at the southeastern part of Guimaras Island facing Negros Occidental. It can be viewed across the strait.
Sibunag was named after its main river. Legend has it that Sibunag, son of a deity and a mortal, was stolen when only a baby from his mother. He was cared and raised by a fairy.
When he grew up, because of his numerous and amazing adventures and romance, his name found a niche in the hearts of the people. The main river of the place was named after him, and now the town.
Sibunag has a land area of 12,004 hectares consisting of 14 barangays, five of which are coastal and one, Inampulugan, an island barangay. Its population is placed at 20,104 with a density of only 148 persons per kilometer. Eight barangays are on the mainland.
Inampulugan Island is host to Costa Aguada Island Resort and its botanical and zoological park. The resort has attracted thousands of tourists from other parts of the country and even abroad.
Another internationally-known resort in Sibunag is Nagarao Island Resort off Brgy. San Isidro, now otherwise known as the Robinson Isle of the Philippines because of the adventure tour it offers to guests, mostly foreigners.
Then there is Jesa Mar Beach Resort located at Naoway Island, San Isidro, noted for its abundance of delicious seafoods.
Ususan Islet is uninhabited except by the owner himself. Ususan will make a good site for another resort. It has a fine white sand beach just five minutes to cross by pump boat from the mainland on a clear day. From here you can see, to the southeast, the large Inampulugan resort island.
There are more islets to be discovered in Sibunag if you are adventurous enough to explore more of the municipality, on the offshore part of town. Who knows, you will find your own islet where you can be King someday!
Power is provided by the local Guimaras Electric Cooperative (Guimelco), but the road network needs improvement for faster access to the locality and vice versa with the provincial center at Jordan.
Then more people from the Guimaras mainland as well as those of Negros and Iloilo, can discover this less explored part of the island province.
We guarantee that you will find both romance and adventure in Sibunag by land or sea.
